There are MANY causes of numbness and tingling so this is a bit more complex than a simple yes or no answer.
In the context of the musculoskeletal system, Chiropractors most often work with nerve impingement issues caused by muscle tightness, inflammation, disc injuries, joint or ligament inflammation, etc.
Two, very common, examples are Cervical Radiculopathy and Lumbar Disc Injury with Radiculopathy. Both conditions are absolutely treated successfully by Chiropractors. Let’s take a quick look at both of these conditions.
Cervical (NECK) radiculopathy is characterized by either pain or numbness and tingling down the upper extremities due to nerve impingement. This can be caused by years of poor posture, or medical history of a car accident or sports trauma. Chiropractors treat this through non-surgical spinal decompression of the neck, as well as with spinal adjustments and cervical (NECK) and upper back postural muscle strengthening.
In the case of Lumbar Radiculopathy that accompanies disc injury, the mechanism is very similar. Those with reduced core engagement or hyperextension and poor posture are predisposed to unhealthy disc tissue that can result in a bulge or herniation. The disc material or resulting inflamed ligaments can compress the nerves exiting the spine causing either pain or numbness and tingling down the legs. Medical history of accidents or sports traumas can lead to this as well. Much like Cervical Radiculopathy, Chiropractors use non-surgical spinal decompression to treat the Lumbar (LOW BACK) spine in an effort to take pressure off of the disc and nerve roots that cause radiating pain. Chiropractors will also utilize core strengthening to reduce the chances of recurrence or re-injury.
Ultimately, it is very important to know the exact mechanism or root cause of your numbness and tingling in order to receive proper care! Next time you experience numbness or tingling, give HFC a call!
