Chronic pain doesn’t necessarily come from chronic or permanent damage. Many times we have an injury or we are given a diagnosis that sends our BRAINS (nervous system) into a downward spiral. This has truly devastating consequences for people who begin to behave as though they are damaged, or like they will just hurt themselves again – and they are completely, structurally sound!
Injury sends a message to your brain to actually LOWER YOUR PAIN THRESHOLD so that you will limit your movement to avoid further injury. Although this is protective initially, long term lack of movement can actually lead to further issues making recovery harder.
THIS is why we push you when it comes to your treatment. If we do a thorough exam and X-Rays to find that you are structurally safe to treat, we have to PUSH your pain threshold back up to where it was prior to your chronic pain or injury. Although it can be challenging, we have found results to be extraordinarily better and that our patients become active participants in their care for the long term!
Getting adjusted means providing data and feedback to your nervous system about proper movement patterns. Rehabilitative stretching and strengthening reinforces that data and provides you with tools to maintain your treatment in between visits.
