I Made the Appointment When I Was in Pain, but Now I Feel Better

We don’t hear this often, but every once in a while someone will come in for their new patient appointment and tell me that they aren’t sure if they should be here because they called when they are hurting but have improved since then.

My first answer is always…. “Don’t you hate that? You take your cell phone into the store because it isn’t working, then it works perfectly when you get there?”

We aren’t cell phones, but the underlying concept is the same. Your phone can behave one moment, but due to an underlying issue the dysfunction can/does return.

In another context… if your tooth hurts you, you probably have a cavity already. You don’t wait for the cavity to care for your teeth (we hope). You do things DAILY to ensure you don’t get to the point of pain. Yet, we do not apply this very simple concept to the rest of our body. We will wait for back pain, neck pain and headaches before we seek any care, and many of us will find it easier to take medication with side effects rather than mitigate the root causes.

When it comes to the body specifically, it is important to understand that pain is communication that typically happens LAST. By the time you have pain, there is damaged tissue, inflammation, etc. These things can heal, but if there is an underlying issue or your lifestyle even predisposes you to injury – the pain can return.

We have gotten to a place where we only seek healthcare when we are sick or hurt. Healthcare has become less about keeping ourselves healthy, and more about dealing with problems as they pop up.

If you were uncomfortable enough to call in, then you are absolutely at a point that we have something to look at more closely. We will ultimately recommend wellness care ongoing to keep you as healthy as possible in between those episodes of pain as well because well…. HEALTHCARE. CARE FOR YOUR HEALTH.
